The building is located in the place of the former mediaeval village gate demolished during the 19th century. It used to be the house of the provost marshal.

The shelter was transformed in an aid and care station by the German army and considerably strengthened by concrete. In 1919 a café called “ the shelter” opened . It closed in 1990.
