 « The Red Band» itineraries

An historical sightseeing tour called « Red Band » (« Fil Rouge) was created in the three towns of Cernay, Uffholtz and Wattwiller. Some red marks will lead the walker trough the remarkable places of the villages. A leaflet explaining their history is available for free by simple request at the tourist board.

 The Storks Park

 

The park of Cernay was one of the first stork reintroduction centers in Alsace. Today this bird, symbol of Alsace and of the town, flies again in the sky of Cernay

There are today about thirty sedentary couples living all the year long in the park.

Storks feeding times:

 Museum of the « Thann Gate »

The « Thann Gate », a former fortification tower which surrounds the  town since the 13th century, houses today the Museum of Cernay. It shows to the public the local historical heritage

  The « Hartmannswillerkopf »

Strategic point for battles during 1914-1918. The fortifications and military equipments remain impressive. Registered historical monument  since 1912, the Hartmannswillerkopf is a place for memory.

  The Steam train Thur Doller

 An authentic 1982 steam train running from Cernay to Sentheim

At station: refreshment bar and various exhibitions.

Events throughout the year: Indian attack of the train, Halloween train...

June and September: runs on Sundays and bank holidays. Departure from Cernay Saint André at 11am and 3.30pm.

July and August on Wednesday departure from Cernay Saint André at 10am and 2pm, on Sunday departure from Cernay Saint André at 11am and 3.30pm.

The Oratory path

 In this region at the threshold of the Vosges there is a significant number of oratories and chapels to discover in the towns of Cernay, Steinbach, Uffholtz and Wattwiller.

Those chapels are listed in a free leaflet « le sentier des oratoires » available by request at the office board.

  The path to discover the Thur river

The path to discover the Thur biotope: a path created to discover the surroundings of the Thur River. Informative boards will lead you to learn more about the wildlife and plant life of this natural protected area.

Two documents will guide you : a three languages leaflet (F-G-B) and a guide-booklet for the visit are for sale at the tourist board for 1€ and 3€

 The path of the Mines in Steinbach

Starting from the Silberthal, way-out of the village of Steinbach, three marked paths completed with technical information guide the visitor in the steps of the diggers.

The path of the Erzenbach iron-mines: go in the picturesque and wild glen of the Erzenbach site looking for the vestiges of the former iron-mines. They were in work during the 18th and 19th centuries until the beginning of the 20th century.

The path of the Scheltzenbourg mines: surrounded by a beautiful and outstanding nature, the walker is then carried more than 7 centuries back, looking for the treasured silver ore in one of the most important mediaeval mines of the Vosges

The path of the Saint Nicolas mine: some vestiges at surface level  are still evidences of the hard work needed to operate the iron and lead mines

 Explore the Saint Nicolas mine

 Come and discover the Silberthal former silver mines in Steinbach and the working conditions of the miners of yesterday. These visits are given by « l'Association du Groupe Minéralogique Potasse », a group of people who keep on exploring and rehabilitating this mining heritage.

   

Each Saturday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm.

 Explore the Donnerloch mine

 

The Donnerloch mine, an exploitation at the heart of the Middle Age. After the first years of excavation it clearly appeared that the major part of the mining had been done around 1982.

Active since 1982 in Steinbach, the association « Les Trolls » realised a succession of authorized operations to get a deeper knowledge of the entire mining ground: historical research studies, map making of all of the former working traces, digs on the site....

Visit of the site each Saturday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm and by appointment

  Explore the potash mine Joseph Else

 The exploitation of the well reputed Alsatian potash mines has now stopped, but many sites still exist today.

You will have the opportunity to discover the fascinating adventure of the Alsatian mines escorted by a former miner: world wild mineralogical collection, the famous « room of the hanged man » where the diggers used to change clothes, the working methods and their life in these times ... and watch a movie narrating the life of those men.

 Located on the Wine Route, 5 minutes by car from Cernay, the  Vieil Armand wine cellar is an Alsatian cellar with a characteristic and authentic  atmosphere and taste for traditions. It is a pleasure to come and experience  great and diverse Alsatian wines.

The wine grower Museum: it presents the range of all the equipment formerly used in the vineyard and cellar

This is a project for a resource and interpretation centre concerning the Vieil Armand and the First World War regional patrimony. In Uffholtz at the bottom of the Vieil Armand, the « Memory Shelter » is designed to be a place for meeting , information and visitor orientation, for mediation over the past, for citizen education and for the promotion of a culture of peace.
